Compacting a Porch or Driveway Base Before Concrete or Pavers
Cracked slabs and sunken pavers start with a loose base. How to prepare and compact a porch or driveway base, and which compactor suits the job.

Cracked porch slabs and sunken pavers usually have one thing in common: the base underneath was never compacted properly. Concrete and interlocking pavers are only as solid as the ground they sit on. If the sand or crusher run below them settles later, the surface follows.
This guide covers how to prepare and compact a porch or driveway base, which machine suits the job, and what to sort out before you rent one.
Why the base matters
A porch or driveway carries foot traffic, cars and, in Malaysia, plenty of rainwater. The base spreads that load and keeps water from softening the ground underneath.
What goes wrong without compaction
- Concrete slabs crack where the ground below sinks unevenly.
- Pavers drop and rock, especially where car tyres run.
- Water collects in low spots and washes out fine material.
Common base materials
Most residential bases use crusher run, sand, or a combination laid over the existing soil. Your contractor or the product supplier will advise on thickness for your situation. Whatever the material, it needs to be compacted in layers.

Step by step: preparing and compacting the base
1. Clear and dig out
Remove grass, roots, old tiles and soft topsoil. Organic material rots and leaves gaps, so it should not stay under a slab or pavers.
2. Compact the ground first
Before adding any base material, run the compactor over the exposed soil. Soft spots will show up as areas that sink or move. Dig these out and fill with better material.
3. Lay the base in thin layers
Spread the crusher run or sand in thin, even layers instead of one thick pile. A compactor works on the top part of a layer, so a very deep layer can stay loose at the bottom even when the surface feels firm.
Moisture
Material that is slightly damp compacts better than bone-dry or soaked material. A light spray of water on dusty crusher run helps. After heavy rain, give a soaked base time to drain.
4. Overlap your passes
Work in straight lines and overlap each pass a little, so no strip is missed. Make several passes over each layer, changing direction if space allows.
5. Do not forget the edges
Edges along walls, drains and kerbs are often missed. These are the spots where pavers sink first. Take extra care to compact right up to the edge.
6. Check the level and the fall
Before concrete or pavers go down, check the surface is even and has a slight fall away from the house, so rainwater drains off. Fix any low spots with more material and compact again.
Which machine suits a porch or driveway
Plate Compactor for most home bases
For a typical porch, car porch or garden path, the Plate Compactor is the usual choice. It presses and hardens soil or sand over small areas and fits through a house gate. Rental is RM400 per 1 week or RM1,000 per 1 month.
Roller Compactor (1 Ton) for longer driveways
For a longer driveway, a private lane or a wider area, the walk-behind double-drum Roller Compactor (1 Ton) covers ground with more weight. It suits small road works and tight spaces, at RM600 per 1 week or RM1,400 per 1 month.
Larger sites
For an access road or a bigger parking area, the ride-on Roller Compactor (3 Ton) at RM1,800 per 1 week or RM5,000 per 1 month may fit better. You can compare all three on our compactor fleet and rates.
